When looking at a photograph, we focus on the subject in front of the camera and sometimes forget about the photographer. If we know the gender of the photographer, it can make a considerable difference in how we see a photograph. Although there are more male than female professional photographers in the world, women have made, and are making, major contributions to the art. Out of all amazing female photographers around, there are ten who revolutionized the industry:

© Sally Mann

Annie Leibovitz: a renowned photographer who got her big break as the chief photographer of Rolling Stonemagazine. There, Leibovitz helped define the look of the magazine with her intimate and iconic photographs of celebrities, including Yoko Ono and John Lennon on the day of his death, Demi Moore pregnant and nude, and Whoopi Goldberg in a bathtub full of milk.

Annie Griffiths Belt: a well-known landscape photographer, who got her big break as one of the first female photographers to work for National Geographic magazine, where she traveled the world shooting exotic places and people. Her inspiring collection of photographs has been featured in Lifemagazine, Geo, Stern magazine, Smithsonian magazine and dozens of other publications.

Dorthea Lange: she was an influential American documentary photographer, who’s best known for chronicling the Great Depression and photographing migratory farm workers, as well as the unemployed and homeless. During the 1930s, Lange worked for the federal Resettlement Administration (RA) that was later called the Farm Security Administration (FSA). Her most famous piece of work, “Migrant Mother,” features Florence Owens Thompson and her two children.

Lauren Greenfield: one of today’s most important and controversial photographers. Her work focuses on the major issues affecting young women today, including body image, eating disorders, wealth, beauty, media and consumerism. Greenfield’s photography is shocking and unglamorous, but she manages to capture a great deal of truth and emotion with each shot. Greenfield is commended for her curiosity and bravery that has brought light to the ugly pressures affecting today’s youth.

Martine Barrat: influenced the industry by photographing people who are often forgotten in society. Barrat was known for taking photos of African Americans living in Harlem and South Bronx, New York, and becoming a member of their community. She lived by and developed strong relationships with her subjects. This unique approach to photography and professional research has made her quite the innovator.

Mary Ellen Mark: she has revolutionized the photography industry with her stark black and white portraits that typically capture the weak, homeless and unusual. In order to photograph her subjects in such vulnerable and intimate moments, Mark will sometimes live with them to gain a greater perspective of their daily lives and challenges. One of her most famous photos features a homeless family crammed inside a dilapidated car. Her gritty, raw pictures combined with her compassionate nature toward her subjects truly resonate with fans and makes her a one-of-a-kind photographer.

Sally Mann: she has impacted the photography industry with her powerful black and white photographs of children and landscapes of the Deep South. The Lexington, Virginia, native got her start photographing her three children and husband, and eventually added landscapes of Alabama, Mississippi, Virginia and Georgia to the mix. Mann has been known to use damaged cameras and scratched lenses to capture a dark, ghostly look. Her organic and intimate depictions of children and nature set her apart from the rest.

Diane Arbus: a revolutionary photographer who pushed the envelope by photographing social outcasts and those who were thought to be deviant, such as giants, dwarfs, transvestites, circus performers and nudists. Arbus’ signature black and white photos of people on the fringes of society became very popular and she became the first American photographer to have an exhibition at the Venice Biennale.

Julia Margaret Cameron: a British photographer during the 1800s, who became known for her celebrity portraits and Arthurian-themed photos. She was one of the first photographers to do closely cropped portraits. Cameron may not have been appreciated during her time, but she was later revered as a major influence to modern photography.

Jill Greenberg: an innovative photographer known for her stunning portraits and fine art work. The self-described “manipulator” has created a personal style of staging and physically or digitally manipulating her images in a way that almost always causes controversy. Greenberg’s most famous work includes herEnd Times portrait series that featured controversial images of crying and distressed toddlers, as well as her various celebrity and CEO portraits.

Ontiñena inhabitants will sell their lands and then their lives will change for ever, Ontiñena will never be the same. Today it looks like this project is disappearing.

The government of the autonomous Spanish region of Aragón and ILD signed an agreement on 12th December 2007, to build the vast amusement and casino park in the vicinity of the village of Los Monegros. Several investigations about ILD shareholders with dubious backgrounds, delayed deadlines, political bribes, a new “custom-made” low, future environmental disasters, and even more suspicions have caused a polemic among the great majority of Aragon citizens, ecologists and the slightly leftist politicians who are against this ambitious project. It appeared that only Ontiñena inhabitants and the actual Aragon Government remain in support of it. Developers have already paid 14% of the money to the lands owners (most of them Ontiñena inhabitants), they would pay the rest in June and October. But the economic crisis could derail this project. ILD, is accumulating delays and claims, that are seriously questioning the future of Gran Scala.

Ignacio uses acidic and buril over metallic surfaces giving life to his paintings, creating textures and building landscapes, fog, clouds… If we understand photography as light, in this case light is also creating images, skies, sceneries, atmospheres…one single painting could be more than a hundred, depending on the way the light reflects on it and where you are standing as a spectator.

If you are in Spain and want to see his art he has an exhibition in Zaragoza (March 22nd / April 20th). Do not miss it if you live in this city!

I have watched many night photography videos, but no one like this one. In this video Scott Martin and Lance Keimig explain us how to take amazing night photographs, they literally paint with light. We can see here how they work in darkness, creating great images, giving us a beautiful and inspiring introduction to night photography.

This is an international Street Photography Festival, although it has its main activities (workshops, exhibitions, lectures…) in King’s Cross London, it offers an International Award. The international winner will receive £1,000 cash plus an all expenses paid trip to the exhibition launch and awards ceremony in London.

Street photography can be interpreted in many ways, sometimes more easily defined as a method than a genre. But there are always common key aspects such as spontaneity and careful observation; its documentary evidence of life, social habits and journeys in the public realm; it captures and explores contemporary society and the relationships between individuals and their surroundings; sense that the captured scene isunplanned, with an absence of prior arrangement…

I have been updating my website the last few days, making it a bit more user friendly. Going through my portfolio, I found I have some travel photography that I did not posted. I realized I have some photos I took in Algarve, Berlin, Dublin and Brussels. I show you here some of them, will post the rest during this and next week.

© Arantxa Alcubierre

On September 2009 we visited the south of Portugal, Algarve. Flying from London to Faro, we spent nine days travelling and visiting this area.

We went to Tavira, Lagos, Luz, Carrapateira, Sagres and small villages we found in our way. As usual, I took the camera with me, but the most of the days I left it the room…, so here you have 1 photo per day.

I hope you like them.
