British Journal of Photography is changing

British Journal of Photography established in 1854, it is one of the world’s longest running and influential photography magazine. It went fortnightly in 1857 and weekly in 1864, establishing the blueprint for photographic journalism and featuring articles by eminent writers such as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

It has today unveiled a new look, a raft of new editorial sections and a come back to its monthly format after being a weekly magazine during more than 150 years.

The new version of British Journal of Photography will be on sale from the first Wednesday of every month, and it will cost £6.99.

A Photographic Benefit for Survivors of the Haiti Earthquake. “Onè Respe”.

By now you have heard of the devastation caused by the massive earthquake in Haiti. Reports are still coming in, and we do not know the full measure of the damage. Hospitals, residences and government buildings have collapsed or damaged. In interviews, Haitian officials have asked all friends of Haiti to please provide any assistance possible to the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere.

Several photographers including the photojournalist Mary Ellen Mark, have donated the use of one or more of their works to help create this issue as a fund-raising photography magazine to benefit Haiti. The title Haiti: One Respe comes from a traditional Haitian greeting meaning “honor and respect”

The magazine has images of pre-earthquake Haiti. Peter Pereira was there in November and shot an essay on the mountain people of Haiti, and while Lindsay Stark and Chet Gordon’s photos are a bit older, they still show the real face of Haiti.

Photographer Promo Video by Redux Pictures

Redux Pictures is a commercial and editorial photo agency based in New York with photographers located around the world. They started seven years ago and emerged as an industry leader, receiving awards, such as World Press, Overseas Press Club, American Photography and Communication Arts. They have a great blog, where they share some individual photographer promo videos that have been in the works for the last few months.

I think this is a good initiative to brand its individual photographers so effectively. I think every photographer should have a promo video like this, it says much more about a photographer than a slide show on a portfolio page.

I would like to share this one, it surprised me. Photographer Kevin Cooley shows in this video several ways of using/exploiting light. Do not miss it.

5 Online Photography Magazines I like

Online magazines are good way to start getting your work published.

I have been checking some of them on the internet, and rounding up 5 of my favorite web magazines.

- 1000 Words pairs cutting edge photos with photographer interviews and book reviews.

- Burn focuses on the work of emerging photographers. Most of the photo essays are presented as slideshows with audio, but we like hitting mute and seeing one photo at a time.

- UK-based Deep Sleep has an urban aesthetic. Each issue has a different theme: the first one is “invisible” (“alien” and “dance” are up next).

- International photography is the focus of Lens Culture. The magazine also sells limited-edition prints by featured photographers.

- French webmag Purpose looks and reads like the pages of a print magazine. There is very little text, and each issue has a broad theme like “memory” or “childhood”.

Mandarin Oriental Group

Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group, is a collection of luxury hotels. Perfectly located in the world’s most prestigious destinations, with legendary service and exquisite facilities, steeped in the values of the orient.

They had three event last month, where all the guests had their photo taken as its “fan” marketing campaign. Mandarin Oriental hired me for that photo shoots. The events were placed in London, Brighton and Chester.
